Art Basel 2013: Stand G6

Borzo gallery is showing at Art Basel 2013 a one-man show by Jan Schoonhoven. 9 reliefs and a number of beautiful drawings, covering his career 1950 - 1990. You can find us in the section Features, stand G 6.

2014 will mark the centenary of one of the Netherlands' truly outstanding artists. Jan Schoonhoven (1914-1994) was one of the most modest artists imaginable: he remained a civil servant at the Dutch Post Office right up to his retirement. Alongside his life as an artist he had a need for this regularity, for the daily rhythm of a structured existence. He was no different as an artist: regularity, rhythm, seriality were his hallmark, once he and his friends Armando, Peeters and Henderikse came together in the NUL group.

The international reputation of this movement, and in particular that of Jan Schoonhoven, is now evident. It is striking that Piet Mondrian is the Netherlands' most famous artist in the first half of the 20th century and it now looks like an artist with a similarly geometric-abstract form language, Jan Schoonhoven, is being presented as a worthy successor for the second half of the century.

A series of Zero exhibitions in New York, Berlin and Amsterdam museums commencing in 2014, will draw visitors' attention internationally.

The year will also see the publication of the first integral monograph on the life and work of Jan Schoonhoven by Antoon Melissen, to whom I am extremely grateful for his introduction in this Art Basel publication.

Over the past 15 years our gallery has consistently collected and exhibited Schoonhoven's work. For Art Basel 2013 it has been a unique challenge to be able to present a series of his reliefs and drawings.
