From 1981 to 1982, herman de vries stayed at the Canary Island of La Gomera for an extended period of time, declaring the island as a work of art in 1982, titled here. Fascinated by its unique variety of plants, de vries has returned to the island numerous times since then. These trips resulted in a great number of works, including journals, publications, vegetation works and earth rubbings.
This four-panel earth rubbing from 2000 is amongst the most monumental of these. It was part of the important exhibition all in 2014 at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, curated by Colin Huizing, and of the retrospective exhibition 70 jaar de natuur als kunstwerk in 2025 at the Rijksmuseum Twenthe, curated by Cees de Boer.
